MARMOTS
The Marmots Program is the next step after Jackrabbits for young skiers 9–13 years old who are ready to continue developing their skills, confidence and love of Nordic skiing. Designed to promote physical literacy, fitness and a lifelong enjoyment of sport, Marmots supports athletes during Sport Canada's Learn to Train stage of Long-Term Development.
Marmots provides a fun, supportive environment where athletes continue to develop strong classic and skate skiing skills while building confidence, teamwork and independence. Through a partnership between Strathcona Nordic Ski Club and the Vancouver Island Biathlon Club, participants also have opportunities to experience biathlon as part of their Nordic journey.
One of the greatest strengths of Marmots is its flexibility. The program offers two streams (Level 5 and Level 6), allowing athletes to participate at the level that best matches their interests, experience and goals. Some skiers simply want to continue improving their skills, spending time outdoors and skiing with friends, while others are ready for additional training and competition. The competitive pathway previously offered through the Devo program remains an important part of Level 6 Marmots, providing a clear progression toward Junior Race for athletes who choose that path.
Is Marmots Right for My Child?
Marmots is designed for athletes who:
Are approximately 9–13 years of age.
Have completed Jackrabbits Level 4 (or equivalent) and demonstrate the skills needed to continue progressing.
Are comfortable using both classic and skate ski equipment.
Have (or rent) appropriate classic and skate ski equipment.
Enjoy being active outdoors and are excited to continue improving their skiing.
Are ready to participate in a positive, team-oriented environment that encourages personal growth, confidence and fun.
Our coaches work with each athlete to ensure they are placed in the stream that best supports their development.
Level 5 and Level 6
Level 5 – Skill Development
Perfect for athletes who want to continue building their skiing skills, confidence and fitness in a fun, supportive environment. Racing is optional, and athletes are encouraged to explore Nordic skiing at their own pace.
Level 6 – Competitive Development
For athletes seeking additional training and competition opportunities. This stream builds on the former Devo program and prepares skiers for progression into the Junior Race program.

Training opportunities vary throughout the season and may include camps, dryland sessions, roller skiing and other activities.
Camps & Competition
Marmots offers opportunities to participate in regional camps throughout the year, along with optional spring and summer training.
Athletes interested in competition can take part in local events such as the Teck Coast Cup, Vancouver Island Loppet and other age-appropriate races. Those participating in the Level 6 stream may also attend regional camps and provincial events as part of their continued competitive development.
Whether an athlete chooses to race regularly or simply enjoys skiing with friends, every participant is encouraged to challenge themselves, support their teammates and celebrate personal improvement.
Coaching
Our qualified coaches create a safe, welcoming and supportive learning environment where every athlete can develop at their own pace. Training is age-appropriate, athlete-centred and focused on building confidence, skills and a lifelong enjoyment of skiing. Qualified coaches at the Learn to Train level of training work with these athletes.
